Sad facts about Kadazandusun...

Kadazandusun (a.k.a 'Kadus'):
* The largest ethnic group in Sabah, making up 1/3 of the state population.
* Out from 0.8 million Kadus-es all over the world, less than 50% can speak their native language.
* From those 0.4 million (rough estimation) who can speak Kadus, 75% of them are over 40 y.o.
* Less than 5% of those under 25 y.o can speak the language.
* Due to its extreme complexity (in terms of grammar, syntax and semantic), Kadus Language is almost impossible to be taught effectively at schools (using formal and conventional method). It must be nurtured at home, naturally.
Putting these facts all together, Kadus will become a highly exotic language by the year of 2020, which is then, will be only spoken by less than, may be, 50 thousands people in the entire world. And, assuming that the current trend will remain unchanged (which is most possibly, YES!) - this language would be totally disappeared before we, even, reach the mid of this new millennium. How sad is that?
Is this an exaggeration? NO. I have a living proof. Coming from a very BIG FAMILY, I have no less than 50 ‘real-biological’ nephews and nieces (I lose count because they keep coming each year!). The oldest was born in 1969 – yes, older than me! None of these 50 young generations speaks Kadus, although some do understand the language.
Having the ability to converse in Kadus, fluently and convincingly: it doesn’t really give me any significant advantage – as far as ‘material gain’ goes. Kadus is neither a national nor a global language. However, this is one of the only two things (the other one is ‘syahadah’) that I wouldn’t trade for anything. Why? Because it solidly defines my identity and spiritual existence – in this chaotic and fluid universe. Am I suggesting that those who can't speak their mother tongues: are considered less 'identifiable' and not so 'spiritual' when it comes to his/her existence as a human? Well, to be brutally honest - yes, I'm suggesting exactly that!

hi.... sad but true our language semakin pupus... recently i read an article in the local news saying that KDM pay to learn
their own language ... atleast some effort to be done lah...kalau korang perasanlah kan.. orang yang lahir selepas 1970 ramai yang inda pandai cakap kadazan or dusun....tapi saya msih kagum orang dusunlah sana ranau masih memelihara bahasa ibunda diorang... saya takut satu hari nanti kalau tidak ada kesedaran dari sekarang bahasa kita jadi bahan tontonan orang ramai di muzium bahasa suatu hari nanti,,,palis 2000x

Rem Palui: "means that your 'big family' is a failure... so, instead of 'crying', do soemthing, start from you children..."
You really live up to your name - PALUI. If I were one of your family members, I would have commited suicide right away for sharing the same genetic with someone so brainless and idiot. Luckily, I'm not. :)
Let's start with your "failure" comment. If you read carefully my entry -- there is no mentioning of such statement. As much as I believe that we should teach the younger generation to speak their mother tongue (i.e. Kadazandusun) -- I never suggest that it's the indicator of failure or success. There are many factors to define you as a person, and your achievement in life.
And if that "comment" is your own personal view (and not actually referring directly to my entry) -- then you should buy a one-way ticket to Timbuktu and don't EVER again return to Malaysia (Sabah in particular)! You are such a disgrace to human civilisation.
And how did you know that I didn't do "something"? At least I have this 'living blog' -- writing and sharing my thought about the issues. How about you, yourself: what have you done? Apart from crying and bitching around all over the net, offering your worthless sarcastic comments?
I appreciate your visit to my blog. But please... don't poison my other readers and visitors with your extreme stupidity. I don't know who I should blame. Wheather your parents (assuming that your not a street bastard kid) or the surrounding where you have grown up. I leave it to you.. to choose. Please.
You have the gut to share your silly opinion here, with the entire world? SHAMELESS. Now, please go and make shit somewhere else. Not here. :)

'Salam Kointutunan Ambalut'
Last week i balik sabah, cuti seminggu. So my mummy bring me 2 jalan2 makan angin at poring hot spring. We going with my cousin n family.. rasa happy sangat bila mandi air panas kat kolam. But, sayang coz tak boleh pakai sabun.. air panas kat kolam pun dah berbau telur ayam.. but we'all still happy, em.. telur ayam pun telur ayamla.... Staying at Enggang Cabin 4 1 night.
Malam 2, tengah landing2 atas tilam with my cousin, my sister paksa i sing the kinabalu mount song.. manalah i tau!
And finally, she teach me how 2 sing that song.. it's so nice 2 hear n sing the song..
Kinabalu....
tinggi-tinggi gunung kinabalu
tinggi lagi sayang sama kamu
biru-biru gunung kinabalu
tengok dari jauh
hati saya rindu
kinabalu jauh di kundasang
ramai orang boleh pilih-pilih
apa guna pergi ke luar negeri
tengok kinabalu
saya sayang kamu
sumandak-sumandak pun
ramai menunggu,
menari-nari lenggang sumazau,
sekali melihat melenggang
tubuhnya, saya....
jatuh cinta...
Kalau tersilap lyric tu..
mokimaap oku ka ambalut..
kasi-kasila bah.. komen
lyric yg betul.
When i back again to kl,
im feel so lonely..
but, what can i do.. work
is still number one, right!..
Woo... lega rasanye bila dah luah
semua yang terpendam.
Nanti i story lagi kalau free ok.
Itupun kalau u'all tak boring..
Bah.. mamanau oku poh.

Wow, saya sungguh kagum..... I believe if parents tried to teach their kids at the foundation stage, then their kids will be fluent in the future.
So, please parents... Please awake! Its time to us to wake up. Let's start to teach our kids how to speak in our mother tounge correctly... so that they will not loose their identity as Dusun in future even they are not pure Kadus...
 | | | Yen July 28, 2006 11:41 AM PDT
I believe lots of kadus nowadays can speak their mother tongue but of course it will mix up with English or Malay.

Bangmat, ya.. BM pun semakin dirancukan oleh media massa. :)
Jenn, tidak apa bah. Pelan-pelan belajar. Campur-campur slang pun ok. My parents were originally from Bundu Tuhan (they speak/spoke the beautiful Dusun loghat bundu). I was born and grew up as a kid in Kundasang. So, I'm naturally more used to the 'crude' Dusun Kundasang.
Then, when I was 11, we moved to Ranau (yes, pekan Ranau) - so, saya mula cakap Dusun Ranau yang lebih neutral bunyinya. For the last 20 years, I hv been travelling and living outside Sabah (mostly di Semenanjung M'sia).
I'm really grateful that I was nurtured with this language naturally at home.
 | | | Jenn September 16, 2005 05:07 PM PDT
Actually I m 100% pure kadus, but my parents never push me or my other siblings to learn/use d language..Oh my god, your article almost give me heart attact..its an eye opener..ok, I'll try to polish my kadus language... but..d problem is..my kadus language "rojak" of Kadazan + Dusuns (fr various districts) + other languages...its d results of "pandai-pandai belajar sendiri".

I understand the fact nowadays among younger generations especially. Ada yang mimboros Inggilis sedangkan both parents are Kadus. They realize the benefits of being able to speak English in the world nowadays if they want to live. Kau pigi saja bank smua pakai Inggilis. Take the French people as a role model. They are so stubborn to speak in their own language although they're able to speak English..

aloo tompinai...mana bole ajar bahasa dusun di skolah... cuba ajar ini kepada bangsa asing selain dusun... take a simple example.. makan... akano, takano, mangakan, moginakan, ta'akanon, si'akan, pa'akano...etc... would that be sufficient to conclude my point? i mean it is impossible to teach dusun languange at school..kalau sikit sikit tu bole la...tapi to be fluent..sorila..kena kawin dan tinggal dengan orang dusun di kampung dusun la jawapnyeee...heheheh

So, you're from Bundu Tuhan? :) Then we must be related then! Both my parents are tulun Bundu Tuhan. But I was born in Kundasang and grew up in Ranau. So, don't expect me to speak Dusun Bundu Tuhan (the most beautiful Kadus accent!). I used to speak with the extremely crude Kundasang accent. Tapi selalu kena hingi-hingi sama all my older brothers/sisters. So, I polished it up.. dan sekarang pakai slang Ranau yang lebih neutral. I've tried all my life.. but never able to pick up the beautiful Bundu Tuhan accent!
Kadazan Penampang? Hmmm, sometimes I even struggle just to understand it. Let alone to speak! Thanks for the update info on the statistic. Well, it's truly sad... our native language will soon disappear. I'm totally convinced that this is inevitable - unless everyone RE-starts to nurture this language, AGAIN, at home.
Salam kointutunan ambalut!

hi there.. i was browsing tru the net and came across your blog 2 months ago. i've been popping in and out to see and read you. i absolutely like how you put your idea in words... completely readable. although some ideas are definitely not my-kind but since we hv brain and mind we are free to think what we want right? that's freedom of thought and mind.. lol
anyway, i am from bundu tuhan. i am kadus... i can speak dusun fluently... i can understand kadazan but my tounge is not accustomed to utter complicated words in Kadazan... so then i am asking can you? the reason be that i am here is to update you.. statistically it's only 1/5 kadazan in Sabah.. i was in mu undergrad research and i come across this from National Census... Sad? well... thanks to the mix marriage occurences... when you are half Dusun/Kadazan.. u don't consider yourself Kadus... u are then Sino...
anyway.. it's just the statistic really.. of the current population of 2.6 million (correct me if i am wrong with the current census) only one fifth is Kadus...

Call me sceptic or pessimist, but I truly don’t believe that Kadus language is ‘teachable’ through conventional means (i.e. school, college). This language is far too complex, and only by nurturing it at home will keep its survival.

Well look at the positive side, at least the language is now being taught in some primary schools. (But we have to be logical) If things work out well then there'll be a generation gap of those who can speak and can't. Which brings the question whether the new generation will be able to continue the tradition of USING the language, since their parents don't converse in their mother tongue.

Manaf, tulah pasal.

Yes, the weather! Very annoying to have this cold weather at this time of the year. Masuk hari ke-4 tidak keluar rumah - literally!

Anything about Kdzandusun ethnic, it intrigue me. Just wonder if you have any intention to create virtual class for this language

Ony bawa sy ke situ - do some marketing - utk majlis sebelah mlm di rumah Ony. Vege yg di jual smua fresh. those women reminded me of the Kelantanese. Prempuan2 k'tan berjualan di pasar, yg laki2 ke laut.

I don't blame you Ahsue. I can't understand them too.. sometimes. Very confusing. The Roman alphabet is not really that friendly to Kadus Language. There’re loads of Kadus sounds that are not 'spell-able'. :)

Try to understand the language.. TOTAL FAILURE. Hehehe..
