I
Last winter, we didn't have a white Christmas in Norwich. Anyway, it is something expected rather than anomalous. East Anglia, the eastern part of England, is not traditionally known for snowy winter.
For the last ten years, Norwich had never had white Christmas -- but once. That was in 2002 (or was it in 2001?), and yes I was here in Norwich to experience it. Firsthand, for real.
But who had thought that Norwich would have a white Easter? This spring. This is even rarer (well, I don't think it had ever happened before!) compared to having a white Christmas in this part of England. A climate miracle, no?

II
There's nothing more comforting than having home-made pancakes with a mug of hot English tea. For an early breakfast. During a snowy morning. In spring, somemore. Yes, that is 'the real icing' of this rare moment.

It is such a beautiful day. That I secretly wish, it would never come to the end.
III
Of course, nothing is eternal. Especially a nice thing. Like this. But at least I can enjoy it, as long as I want to. Until it is (finally) gone. Yes, I don't have to rush to the office today.

It is a bank holiday. Here, in UK. J

Wow, I still can't believe it.
It's a snowy spring in Norwich. And, here I am. Enjoying this alarming message from the angry universe. Yes, ladies and gentlemen: global warming is real, and the climate is changing!
Now, be gentle to the earth. OK?

Salam, Dr.Rem,
I LOVE CLIMATE TALKS!!!
TWO GOLD MEDALS for you! (And the third for dishing out Apluses, lol), so, THREE gold medals!
FYI, right at this moment, I'm sitting by candlelight (the only unused birthday candle I can find) in support of this:
http://earthhoursingapore.blogspot.com/
Lappie on battery, btw ;D
Pretty cool, I must say, heh...

Paloma,
Wah, iya ka? Bah, jangan lupa hantar di SSS. Saya mau satu gantang parai wagu. :) Rumilik baru bah sekarang, kan. Iyalah, bulan lima baru mengomot, kan. Lupa pula Tadau Kaamatan -- bulan lima!
Sofwah,
"... isn't there a possibility that there is a sustained chain effect happening globally, due to global warming, that can cause anomalies in the weather patterns, including, influencing La Nina's effects elsewhere in the world?"
Yes, there is a possibility. Wah, kalau pelajar saya tanya gini: terus saya bagi A+! The ocean and atmospheric systems (which are responsible for the climatic features of the universe) are linking all over. So ya... the remote forcing from anywhere can (theoretically) affect any other parts of the world.
Whether that very remote forcing (is prominent enough and) can override the other closer/stronger forcings -- that is an issue that a climatologist (ha ha ha ha!) would normally consider before giving his/her diagnosis.
But yes Sofwah, you have a valid point there. Depends on what climate events we are talking about. :)

Salam,
*Sofwah faints*
Dr.Rem, love it when you talk climate!
I know the science... but it's still nice to be talking about it with someone who actually knows what I'm talking about (And campur-campur dengan perkataan Melayu pulak tu...)...
*Before Sofwah faints again, she's gonna make more foolish layman comments to draw out more climate talk*
Dr.Rem, from your expert view, isn't there a possibility that there is a sustained chain effect happening globally, due to global warming, that can cause anomalies in the weather patterns, including, influencing La Nina's effects elsewhere in the world?
Just for layanning my first layman comment, you deserve a medal... if you layan this one, errr... two medals...?
lol...

Oh ok.. memang bunga tu bukan tulip. Saja-saja file tu saya kasi nama tulip1 -- sebab memang tidak tau nama bunga tu! :)

Sofwah,
Not only that the food looks beautiful. It tastes gorgeous too. :) La Nina (the 'female' version of El Nino) is a remote 'synoptic' forcing, associated with most parts of the world (esp. the Asian, African and South-American continents). This force orginates from the (middle of) Pacific Ocean. But this synoptic forcing is not known to be (significantly) influential for Europe. As for the 'global dimming' -- actually, it doesn't contradict the 'global warming' theory. It's just 'a variation' of it. Yes, a subset of the bigger global-warming phenomenon. Not a specific climatic feature on its own.
UmmuAdam,
Itulah pasal. Di Norwich pun, tiga hari berturut-turut -- salji turun mencanak-canak. Masa awal-awal winter dulu, degil pula tak mau datang...
Bank Holiday sempena Easter bah tu. :)
Idlan,
Oh iya ka? Wow! Tapi Durham memang terletak 3 darjah latitude lebih tinggi dari Norwich (which is quite significant). It's more common there. Untuk turun salji. :)
Becca,
Datanglah lawat KK. Nanti boleh cerita panjang. I'm currently doing research on climate change (and its connection with global warming). And yes, I agree with you... there're no conclusive evidences (something totally undisputable) to suggest that 'the warming' is directly associated with CO2. But then again, saya rasa usaha untuk mengurangkan pengeluaran karbon is good. At least -- it reduces atmospheric pollution, kan? :)
Hana,
Yes... that's another theory on global warming (bukan dari segi saintifik, tapi teori tentang pertentangan politik dunia). Eropah adalah pro-Protocol Kyoto. US adalah anti-Protocol Kyoto. Dua-dua pihak mengemukakan bukti-bukti saintifik untuk sokong pendirian. But then again -- is it really a scientific argument/dispute atau sekadar 'mahu pertahankan' ekonomi masing-masing: that's another question. Europe and Japan can easily outdo US. And this is the reason (ikut pendapat sesetengah orang) -- why US is so against the so-called 'global-warming and climate-change' agenda.
When I attended the UNESCO meeting last year in Paris, wow... wakil dari US mati-mati mempertahankan agenda anti-Protocol Kyoto dia. And I was actually very impressed -- with all the supporting evidences (both from scientific and socio-economic perspectives) that they put forward. Very convincing! Hampir-hampir saya ter-convert jadi non-believer.. he he he he..
Paloma,
Alahai.. bila cerita pasal beras bukit nih, bah.. terus saya mengidam tau! Acara 'mitatabang'!

Dr Rem,
we really need to meet up! I love discussing about the warming up of the Earth (which I acknowledged), but somehow just because at the same time carbon dioxide emission is increasing, to connect them together sounds like a fallacy to me, as I believe the explanation is deeper than that. But maybe I've been 'geologized' =)
Sorry again about January, and yes, I love to visit Kinabalu!
 | | | Hana March 26, 2008 09:39 AM PDT
I had a discussion with a few scientists regarding to this issue.
Happy listening!

Rem,
Bank holiday or Easter Days (Gd Fri and Easter Monday)?
Well, we were in west midlands when the snow came. It was indeed white everywhere and yet by end of this month, summer time begins. Hmmm...
 | | | Sofwah March 25, 2008 10:53 PM PDT
Salam,
Dr.Rem, they are beautiful photos (the food, the most beautiful of 'em all...)...
Thank you...
It's a La Nina Year, btw...
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=060303193233.kbj9sqm0&show_article=1
So, the beautiful alltho strange weather effect is actually due to La Nina, exacerbated by global warming, to be sure...
(Which is not as interesting as the Global Dimming theory, I thought, heh... and I'm beginning to think more plausible... but we'll see...)
Wassalam... | |

Anisah,
Yes, I remember the photo. Ada dalam blog, kan. But I guess it was (then) just some wintry shower. Or some kind of sleet. Yang di Norwich ini -- real snow. Mau juga sampai 4 inci tebal!
Becca,
Ya.. there're many opposing theories (esp. climatologist vs geologist vs astronomist) regarding 'global warming'. But if you read the literatures carefully -- there's one consensus that everyone has agreed. That the global is really warming. And, because of this 'warming trend' -- the climate is changing. No dispute on this fact. Sebab basic science dalam fizik pun memang menyokong perkaitan ini (i.e. it's a well-known fact that climate is governed by the atmospheric property).
Some (European scientists mostly) have consistently argued -- that the warming is human-induced (thus, it is preventable). Some others (esp. US scientists) don't believe the warming has anything to do with human activities. They believe that it's natural. So, any measures taken to stop global warming is useless. Sebab itu ada negara yang menentang Protokol Kyoto (simply because they believe it won't make any difference).
It's a classic case of 'believer' vs 'non-believer'. Dalam konteks politik dunia, UK is one of the strongest believers -- and US (under Bush admin) is the non-convertible non-believer. Tapi parti Demokrat (both Obama and Clintan) kata diorang akan ambil perhatian lebih serius pada isu ini JIKA calon parti mereka menang sebagai dalam pilihanraya presiden.
Geological cycle (zaman ais, lepas tu jadi panas, lepas tu masuk era ais semula): yes, I'm aware of this evidence. Tapi panjanglah pula kalau nak debat, kan? Ha ha ha ha! But yes -- "global warming" is a very complicated issue. :)
Saya dok tunggu sebab kata nak datang bulan Januari.
Mardhiah,
Apa Fuse ADVERB? Saya tak hantar apa-apa pun? Atau buat iklan kat mana? Hmmm...

Thank you for the FUSE adverd, saya dah sign up jadi ahli dah...
 | | | Rebecca Ilham March 25, 2008 04:53 AM PDT
Hi Dr Rem,
it snowed here on Easter's Eve too!
I have a different view on global warming, though. Geological evidence points out that it isn't true.
Actually, that was the reason I wanted to go see you in January, but time was against me =<
 | | | Anisah March 25, 2008 12:32 AM PDT
Happy Spring Festival! For my bank holiday, I was talking about poverty with 20 other people. After that, I saw rafflesias with 4 friends.
Rem, I have the same photo. Daffodils in snow, taken in 2003 or 2004(?) I put the photo up my blog a few winters ago.
