Rem: brutal, but honest. Blogging PURELY for leisure. So, don't take me seriously.

A nice guy living in Kota Kinabalu. The capital city of Sabah (Malaysia), mainly populated by Pilak and Indon. A professional climatologist. A soft-core socialist (yes, I strongly disapprove capitalism!). A dedicated teacher, and a passionate researcher.

If you're new here, you may need to read this and this.

Salju

(For some people) coming into 2008 could be just a normal periodic transition. From one year to another. Like its was for me -- the last couple of years.

This time, it is more than just a plain 'Happy New Year' -- for me. A 'Happy New You' would probably more like it. On personal level, the change has been (quite) dramatic from 2007 to 2008. New place. New job. New surroundings: climate, culture and people. And obviously: some new challenges.

Well, a new life. Almost.

(i)
The first four days in Norwich, I was squatting staying with a Malaysian friend. A PhD student in the same department where I did mine six years ago. Good thing about Norwich: the Malaysian community might be small in size (less than 30 families!), but big in everything else.
J

Big, as in 'semangat': tolong menolong, bantu membantu. Something you probably won't see much within the Malaysian community in big cities like Manchester, Leeds, et. al.

The same spirit is still very much in place, as it used to be when I was here few years back. Sikap ambil tahu. Ambil peduli. Terutama bila ada warga baru yang datang.

After the Christmas + New Year break, on the 2nd January of 2007 2008, I moved into my own self-contained apartment in the university. This is how it looks like. A very futuristic architecture. Yes, one of UEA's famous signature landmarks.

You better believe it -- this super-contemporary building was erected in the early 1970s. Simply way ahead of time!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

My ward-robe. That's all I have. A couple of winter jackets, four jeans and less than three jumpers. Well, plus some tees, socks and briefs -- of course.

You don't need more than what you need, do you? A simple life-style can save the earth from unnecessary-and-excessive exploitation. J

When you travel, try to be as light as possible. It makes your journey much easier if you don't carry unnecessary baggage. And, I do mean it -- both literally and proverbially.

You know what is this? OMG, it's a dual-band alarm-clock-radio. Wow!! You get why there's such an exaggerated excitement here?

No?

Ok, this model is a classic one. It is probably older than my late mother, and it still works –- perfectly.

I will definitely tapau this one home. Seriously.

(ii)
Another bonus, this apartment is overlooking the varsity lake.

Kadang-kadang ungu.

But hold on. This is neither summer, nor autumn. It's winter. Through out my stay here, the view will be neither scenic, nor panoramic. What you really get? Gloomy and foggy -- almost all the times. Depressingly dull, at its best.

Never mind. Forget the exterior ambiance. Let's get inside this tiny apartment.

The facilities are not bad, considering that it's an accommodation within the campus premise.

The best thing is: the centralised heating system is so damn good.

Which is not a bad thing if you live alone, isn't it?

(iii)
And, it is only two-minute walk from the office where I will be working, the next four months. How convenient!

How much the rental is? Some of you may be curious to know.

£497.40 per-calendar month. That is somewhere around RM3481.90. In Malaysian currency. So, the total amount for my 4-month rental will be very-very close to RM14K. And that is just for accommodation. Bench/attachment fees and living cost have, yet, been included.

Malaysian tax payers -- please don't jump on me!

None of you has to pay any of those expenses. Not a single cent. It's all taken care by my Chevening Fellowship, courtesy of British Council and the UK's Royal Society. Yes, a truly noble commitment (by British people!) in promoting cultural diversity and knowledge. Can you disagree?

(iv)
Try to compare to this.

When I did my PhD, JPA paid me (only) £435 monthly. With such minimal cash, you can hardly find a decent place -- deserved to be called 'home'. Belum lagi kira belanja makan-minum.

May be that's one of the major reasons why we (read: Malaysia) have relatively high percentage of PhD drop-outs failures. Especially those sponsored by the government (and doing it in UK). What do you expect? These poor students are given this small plate full of everything. They got so many things to worry about, apart from their demanding PhDs!

Most of the times they would insist that the current rate was sufficient. Can you believe it? I can't.

Yet, Malaysia is ambitious enough to send this fake astronaut wannabe for some leisure trips (in)to the space. How much did it cost the tax payers? You go figure.
L

(v)
Don't read my message, wrongly. I don't mean to bite the hand that feeds me. Of course, I'm very grateful that JPA (read: the gomen) gave me the opportunity. But I think they could have done much better to make the struggles here less painful.

These para pegawai-cum-pelajar are not here for fun. Mereka mahu mengisi impian negara: i.e. 80% tenaga akademik universiti berkelulusan PhD menjelang 2010. You have no idea how much some of these PhD candidates had sacrificed: to the extent that some had to sell their souls and comoditise family values. I'm not joking.

So, whether they (we) come back with or without PhD -- don't you dare to judge them. Please don't, because you would never understand the mental misery and brutality they (we) went through. Atas nama mahu mengisi aspirasi pembangunan negara.

(vi)
Good news is, JPA has finally (after all these years of begging!) increased the scholarship for government officials pursuing postgraduate studies overseas. Starting from September 2007. Almost 100% increment. Too bad, it didn't happen during my years. Never mind.

I'm happy for my friends, especially those studying in UK. I know how difficult life is (as a struggling PhD student) -- and this certainly can ease some of the pains.

(vii)
Move on to something totally unrelated, here are some bold wild predictions for 2008. Please-lah, nobody gets upset. These are NOT my wishes. They are just my personal instinctive visions. J

The good ones:

The bad ones:

(vii)
Saya masih menunggu salji pertama gugur di Norwich. Belum-belum lagi kunjung tiba. Sepanjang winter ini.

Wahai salju utara, mari dinginkan Norfolk. Putihkan daerah terpencil ini sempena tahun baru. Jangan biar kami terus ternanti dan menanti.

Cukup jiwangkah ayat itu?

Neutral, TQ for being one of my (not-so-many) loyal readers. :)

As for your questions -- have to admit, I don't have anything solid to back up my so-called instinctive visions. They are just my wild predictions -- purely for.. err... fun. Seriously. :)

But if you're really interested in politics (and the upcoming election) -- my next entry would touch those issues. Bad news is.. I don't know when my next entry will be due. Bit busy at the moment... :)

Umandak,

Wira,
Kalau mau tukar host, go for either Wordpress/Blogspot or Multiply. Way sooooo much better! Blogdrive is a bad choice really. But I didn't know that when I started blogging 3 years ago. So, now it is like I'm trapped in a marriage yang tak bahagia. :) Mau ceraikan pun susah... because it's not easy to reestablish your connection and circle with a new domain.

DR.RD,
Tu la tuu.. I'm still blogging in Friendster sedangkan dah lama teringin transfer to wordpress or blogspot (ke blogdrive lebih baik?). Some of my other friends pun kata diorang mula2 nak tinggalkan komen lepas tu tak jadi tinggalkan komen sebab kena register Friendster dulu. Ada jugak some ppl who only register kosong supaya dapat hantar komen. Tak best juga kalau keadaan Friendster tu membantutkan perbincangan.

Wira,

Memang Hana bercakap dalam konteks past tense tu. Dia sekarang sedang meminati "orang lain" dalam konteks present tense. *wink, wink*

And as for the disunity -- yes, that was what I heard. Za'ba needs a new motto, I guess. "Kami Bersatu" -- is no longer relevant. :)

BTW, I like your thought-provoking blog. Tapi pasal apa tak boleh komen? Mesti register dengan Friendster pulak dah! :(

Olumin,

May). 10-minute walk from one of the most beautiful beaches in Sabah -- does it sound tempting? :)

Ms Hana,
Saya cukup sedar yang awak cuma bercerita dalam past tense saja tu.. hehe.. but thank you very much for reading those poems. I didn't know my teachers distributed the yearbook sampai ke SBP Sabah.

Dr Ramzah,
I noticed my previous comment might be misinterpreted in once sentence when i mentioned "level of piousness". There, I meant "disunity among groups based on different levels of piousness" (and I think you'd understand the situation). Saya fikir, manusia yg "konon2 alim" suka merendah2kan martabat org lain, sedangkan manusia yg "benar2 alim" akan sedar bhw dirinya juga seperti org lain..

Hana,

Suruhlah si Wira datang KK. Nampaknya dia ada ramai peminat di sana! :)

Kony,

TK. Kalau timbus, pakai tanah hitam. Bolehlah nanti berladang di belakang rumah. Ha ha ha!

Ungu & Anisah,

Mungkin salji putih tiada. Salji ungu mungkin ada. Siapa tau. :)

AdeQ,

Ni student tahun 2000 kan? Dari Sarawak? Meneka dalam kesamaran...

Ira,

Belum sempat berkunjung ke rumah Kak Umi. Tapi hujung minggu ni ada jemputan. So, barulah berpeluang gebang panjang. Marilah datang melawat Norwich sementara saya masih kat sini... sampai Mei ni! :)

Rem,
Bersungguh Kak Umi cakap: Ira, tau tak Ramzah ada kat sini... dia kerja kat UEA empat bulan, Kak Umi belum sempat jumpa dia lagi.
Haa... tu kena cepat gi jumpa Kak Umi & Abang Azhar. Orang lama pun dah tak ramai kan, yang tinggal cuma Azhar, Rosmadi, Asmahan & Amy... rasa berbeza tak kunjungan kali ni?
Orang Proton pun bukan drp my hubby's department... oops... ex-department... Since he is no longer with Proton, it's quite impossible to go back to Lotus Cars. But the new company he's joining now seems interested in sending staff to the UK. Harap-harap impian jadi kenyataan, tak kiralah ceruk mana UK pun, asalkan dapat jenguk Norfolk semula!
Arrgh... I miss winter so much, walaupun keluar rumah saya terpaksa pakai 5 lapis baju tapi saya suka sejuk gila macam tu!

Bagus tunggu benda lain.

Wira Budiman Azizan aka WBA? OMG.

And Rem, your self-contained apartment looks oh-so-cool! Serius, bah. Cool gila! hahaha pujian ikhlas ni, teda kaitan dengan pertanyaan saya sebelum ni. Ya, hantar Syed Muszaphar pigi terapung2 like a moron di angkasa lepas (lepas tu the samples did not survive lagi tu! eee bikin panas!) lagi penting bah dari pembangunan pendidikan negara. *sigh*

Yup it's me.. hehe.. saje la bagi clue macam tu.. tapi nak kata suspen pun tak suspen sebab I included my blog address there.. hehe..

I left Za'ba in late 2000 to stay with my coursemates outside campus. Sesekali jenguk Za'ba tu ada la, but you're right, it wasn't the same anymore (even for us who were still in UM masa tu).. Disunity among groups based on skin-colour and level of piousness (I think you know what I mean) was getting worse too.. so when the college invited me to be a panelist for a forum semasa sesi 2001/2002 (masa tu I was active in the Law Society), I used the opportunity to whack them all.. Ha Ha Ha (gelak jahat).. Alaa saja suka-suka.. bukannya I expect nak ada perubahan pun..

Thanks for the jemputan & kesudian to show me around. I'm still not sure whether sempat by April though. Enjoy your stay there!

Ira, boleh. Dah siap bawa camcoder. Lepas ni jangan lupa surf YouTube. :) Masih ramai orang Proton sini. Silih berganti datang.

Product of MAZ? More specific clue, please. :) One of the emcees? Anyway, I'll be here until 30th of April. So.. if you come before then, you're welcome to visit me in Norwich. Will show you around.

Speaking of MAZ 1998 -- that was my last MAZ. In fact, that was the last time I ever in contact with Za'ba -- officially.

I went to Za'ba again once in 2001 (or was it in 2002?). Just passing by. But I could no longer relate to it. It was very different. In many ways. :(
Product of MAZ 98?

Hi ENCIK Ramzah..
It must've been such a long time since I last met you. I bumped into your blog as I was surfing through the blogs of other old friends..

I might be going to the isles again this year, but not sure whether you'll still be there when I go.. All the best for 2008!

Rem,

Look at the bright side of it, hah ada canlah awak nak ngorat dieeeehhhhh, dispite the fact dia "malu" ada peminat macam awak hahaha, dia belum pandai menghargai kritikan yang ikhlas dan penuh rasa cinta.

Kalau dia betul-betul bercerai, awak nak saya sampaikan hajat terpendam awak selama ni ka?
