Name and Shame: Sugarbun!

I don't want to over-dramatise thing but let me put "it" in a plain easily-understood words. Uneducated monkeys are colonising Sabah, and these wild animals are killing our tourism industry (and, the local economy too!). Metaphorically put, of course.
Two nights ago, I was in Sugarbun (Beach Street) which supposedly 'the best local fast-food outlet' in KK. Before officially turning into a socialist (read as 'anti-capitalist'), one of my favourite late-night hangouts is Coffee Bean. But since I have become a Muslim communist (two weeks ago), I make an effort to avoid all these filthy-greedy-multinational-capitalist (yes, it's a single adjective!) fast-food franchises: Coffee Bean, McD, KFC, Pizza Hut, Burger Kings, et. al.
Why? Because these places are guilty for:
-
promoting unhealthy eating habit (i.e. by selling expensive 'zat-less' food)
-
manipulating labour (i.e. odd workers are generally paid within the range of RM34/hour which is, in most cases, at least RM2 below the cheapest meal sold in that outlet itself!)
-
and, to certain extent, killing the local 'restaurant-related' industry (i.e. these multi-nationals have huge capital, and they make full use of it to dominate the so-called 'open market', mainly through extensive misleading advertisement!)
OK, back to my original point the uneducated monkeys. So, I was in Sugarbun that night desperately looking for some divine inspiration, di celah-celah pokok-pokok hijau Sugarbun Street Beach (sambil main internet because, apparently, this lousy place has a TMNET hotspot). Tapi, Sugarbun punya service memang $UCK$ tahap dewa-dewi and that brutally murdered my mood. Terus terbantut semangat mau cari sebuah inspirasi kudus!
Three counters were available, but only one was actually 'working'.
It took me several minutes (later) to actually realise that it was available there. Yang Sugarbun ini pun satu. Kalau sudah gegatal sangat mau offer 'hotspot service' make sure all your workers (esp. the waiter/waitresses) are aware of it.
But, it was horrible. The singers were not only physically ugly (sudahlah buncit seperti pengidap cacing kerawit, pakaian pula serabai macam baru balik dari bersawah) the voices were also painfully unpleasant. I rather listen to some proper non-live musics (cd, vcd, kaset, etc) than having to endure this horrendous live performance. Please-lah, nobody would come to Sugarbun at 11pm (meredah hujan pula tu!) only to get tortured by some D-rated popstar wannabes! Would you?
When you're trying to be patriotic and (making the best effort) to support local outlets this is what you get in return. Patutlah Sugarbun macam mau bangkrap saja. Dia punya papan-nama pun sudah usang berlumut. Ketara sangat tidak mampu mau ganti. Macam mana mau bersaing dengan multi-national fast-food outlets seperti KFC, Pizza Hut, McD, etc? Pekerja-pekerja kebanyakan macam minah dan mamat perasan. Unfriendly and lazy. These are the faces that will keep the tourists from coming back to KK!
If you're looking for a nice inspiring place Sugarbun Beach Street is definitely not the place. However, if you do come (in the name of patriotism support local business bah!), please lower down your expectation. Although the food there is as expensive as other sophisticated fast-food outlets (i.e. KFC, Pizza Hut, etc) the service is no better (if not worse!) than kedai mamak tepi jalan. If I was not patriotic and haven't, yet, self-converted myself into a Muslim Communist I would probably never step my two feet into Sugarbun.

King Kong, CNY tu apa? Centre New York ka? :) BTW, bulih bah pigi minum sana tempat mamak. Saya pun lama sudah indak pigi sana Jalan Lintas.
Rich, one of my students is currently doing research on that 'Gaya Street'. Yes, it's a very interesting issue to look at. I might come back with that issue - once I get access to all the relevant infos.
I personally think that, traditionally, GS carries a lot of sentimental values (for KK). GS tu saya consider signatory street untuk KK - just like 'Petaling Street' to KL.
So, obviously I want any development there to be reasonably sensitive to the local sentiment. Jiwa dan roh KK mesti dijaga menerusi penampilan 'Gaya Street'.
Probably.. cara diorang buat ubahsuai tu.. accidentally has discriminated some loyal shoppers. That place should be 'a working-class domain', but with an appeal to all classes of society. Tapi sekarang ni macam sudah jadi ala-ala 'high class separuh jadi'. Orang mau datang pun takut! Tiada parking lagi tu..

Hey Rem, what you doing for CNY? Meh kita pegi chit chat di kedai mamak Lintas.. cari ilham kutok mengutok.
Peace bro! | |

I would like to ask your comments and views regarding the touch-up of KK's Gaya Street area. After reportedly RM17m dumped in by the Danish Govt, do you think it is justified? What do you think?
Thanks. | |

Iya.. sudah juga pigi SugarBun Tg. Aru. Memang azab habis bah! It is the most coward act. Firstly, they rob the beach from the public (it should be a public domain, not a commercial paid venues!), and then.. they brutally rape it.
Anyway, I have a 'big plan' for Tg. Aru and Anjung Perdana. They just have to wait for the 'big humiliation day' to come... :)

If you think SugarBun Beach Street is bad, you should go look at SugarBun Tg Aru now... punya lah teruk. Kotor, kemudahan rosak sana sini. DBKK really not paying attention at all lah.. I am so disapointed with them..
Ada kau baca news pasal survey Worst Architecture in KK? Sugarbun kena bambu habis bah..!! Dasar management & DBKK mau cari untung saja..now the beach looks worse than before..

Best gila ko punya blog. Haha..I really like the fact that another intelligent educated and pissed-off Sabahan has stepped up to the plate and starting to make noise. We should meet up sometime over a cuppa kopi sometime.
Give me a buzz, eh?
Kind regards,
Richard (ricson_23@yahoo.com)

JR, the food is actually ok. I only have problem with the service - esp. the human part! Roti Kahwin & Kopi Tenom - those are my favourite. BTW, kalau makan dengan 'buah hati', memanglah semuanya sedap bah. Makan daun kayu pun terasa macam hirup madu! :)
Laetitia, welcome to my 'naked blog'. :) Missing KK? When I was in Norwich, I missed KK so much. But since I left KK in 2001, and got home earlier this month - many things have changed. It's more hectic now, and shopping complexes/malls are everywhere.. and they are still building more and more. I wonder why?
Chomel, haiyoooooo... long time no see la! Big grin? Don't tell me you're in KK and have been stalking me? Ha ha ha ha ha!

Rem,
Years ago, I frequented one SugarBun outlet in PJ. I noticed the level of services were not up to the mark, but the food was great.
Maybe because I had my meals with my fiancee then... :)

Alb, bah buli bah. Nanti saya cari kau sana kio. Selalu ka kau pigi mansau sana? :)
Kutut, ambak? Bahasa Brunei.
Anisah, exactly. That's the problem with us - here. And, I certainly can relate to that. BTW, do visit this blog: http://geografi2005.blogdrive.com/
Send me some comments/suggestions if you have any.

It's been some time since I visited your blog. I didn't have internet access. This latest entry, and your 'conversion', I'm pleased and proud of you!
The thing with some people whom others try to help, like local businesses, is that they think they deserve our help (read patron and custom) without offering anything of good value.
Aside from that local fast food, Sugarbun, I can think of various Sabahan / Malaysian printers and publishers whose products and services are simply ghastly. We aren't talking about English publications, where no amount of proof-reading would iron out the many typing errors. They even manage to get Malay publications wrong! What is even more frustrating is that on the first round of proof reading, one identifies all the typing errors. On the second round of proof reading, some of the errors identified in the first round is still there, and they managed to blunder other previously correct text! How pathetic is that?
I helped published our annual year book, about 200 pages, years ago in Penang. To non-Malaysian readers, Penang now is also another state within the Federation of Malaysia alongside Sabah and 11 other states. To put it mildly in writing, we had the usual rounds of proof reading, and the final product did not have any of the identified mistakes. Brilliant. The name of that printer is Cathay Printers.
